Meet Jonah Yano, the Toronto native via Hiroshima who wrote and recorded his first release through his cellphone in 2016. Three years later, the studio replaces the cell and he's collaborating with hometown heroes BADBADNOTGOOD on a new single and his Innovative Leisure debut. After hearing an early demo of 'nervous', the all-star cast of musicians invited Jonah to their legendary Studio 69 where they offered to produce and play on 'nervous'. Jonah says 'before I could even realize what was happening I had a song with one of my favorite bands of all-time. The coolest thing though is that making music with those guys is so fun and easy that while we're making songs (pluralised because there is more than just nervous hehe) it's easy to forget their legendary catalogue of genius tunes."
Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
An instant classic! The moment I put this music into my headphones, I knew this was something special. After that, I just had to dig into Pharoah Sanders discogrpahy. Sanders was already a giant of Jazz. But this last release, 18 months before his death can just elevate his reputation even higher. Rest in peace Pharoah! Alex Deschênes
